Categorical Stability of a Personality Disorder From Adolescence to Young Adulthood and Risk Factors for a Personality Disorder in Adulthood in a High-Risk Sample

Delfine d'Huart et al.

Summary: Contrary to previous assumptions, personality disorders are not as stable over time as commonly believed. This study examined the prevalence and stability of personality disorders from adolescence to young adulthood, and identified risk factors in adolescence that contribute to later personality disorders in adulthood.

Childhood Abuse and Neglect a Risk Factor for Social Participation of Young Adults With Previous Out-of-Home Care Placements. Results of the Swiss-Wide Cohort Study Youth Welfare Trajectories: Learning From Experience

Marc Schmid et al.

Summary: This study examined the long-term effects of abuse and neglect on social participation in a sample of formerly out-of-home placed young adults. The results showed negative associations between childhood maltreatment and social participation in health, financial, and social domains. Expectations of self-efficacy were found to decrease these associations.

The Development of Mental Health Problems Among Out-of-Home Placed Children and Adolescents Into Adulthood: A Longitudinal Prospective Study

Suheyla Seker et al.

Summary: The present study aimed to examine the prevalence and trajectory of mental health problems among children and adolescents in residential out-of-home care from childhood/adolescence to young adulthood. The results showed a significant reduction in mental health problems over time, but approximately one-third of the participants still experienced persistent mental health issues. Childhood/adolescent mental health problems were strong predictors of mental health problems in adulthood. Girls had a higher risk of internalizing problems in young adulthood compared to boys.

Summary: This study investigates the stability of personality disorders (PDs) from adolescence to young adulthood, finding that categorical diagnoses of PDs are quite unstable. The study supports the use of the upcoming ICD-11 for diagnosing PDs.

Summary: The study found differences in demographic and psychosocial characteristics between child welfare and juvenile justice youths in shared residential care, but placement in institutions should prioritize treatment needs over judicial title. Alcohol/drug use problems and traumatic experiences may impact adult offending behavior.
