The uncertainty of climate change impacts on China's agricultural economy based on an integrated assessment approach

Qi Cui et al.

Summary: This study empirically assesses the uncertainty of climate change impacts on China's agriculture economy based on IPCC RCP scenarios. The results show that climate change will reduce production, raise prices, increase net imports, and lower self-sufficiency for most crops in China. The uncertainty of climate change impacts varies greatly among different crops, largely determined by the sensitivity of crop yield to climate variables. The confidence intervals for all crops widen over time, indicating rising uncertainty for projecting future changes in the agricultural economy. Compared to RCP 2.6, the uncertainty of climate change impacts is much higher under RCP 8.5 for all crops. China should improve its climate preparedness considering the range of uncertainty on climate change impacts.

Shooting two hawks with one arrow: Could China's emission trading scheme promote green development efficiency and regional carbon equality?

Shengling Zhang et al.

Summary: The study shows that China's carbon emission trading scheme significantly improves green development efficiency and regional carbon equality, by enhancing green total factor productivity (GTFP) and reducing investments in carbon-intensive industries. This confirms the Porter hypothesis and investment transfer effect, highlighting the need for a unified national carbon emission trading market and synergy between ETS and command-and-control environmental regulation tools.

Anthropogenic climate change has slowed global agricultural productivity growth

Ariel Ortiz-Bobea et al.

Summary: Historically, agricultural productivity has grown, but the impact of climate change on this growth is unclear. Over the last 60 years, anthropogenic climate change has decreased global agricultural total factor productivity by 21%, with stronger effects in warmer regions. Global agriculture is becoming more vulnerable to ongoing climate change.

The Impact of Climate Change on Agricultural Insect Pests

Sandra Skendzic et al.

Summary: Climate change has significant impacts on agricultural insect pests, leading to various changes such as expanded geographic distribution, increased survival during overwintering, increased number of generations, altered interaction relationships, and more. These changes pose risks to crop economic losses and human food security, necessitating adaptive management strategies to address the challenges posed by the changing climate conditions.

The impact of climate change on the productivity of conservation agriculture

Yang Su et al.

Summary: The study assessed the productivity of conservation agriculture systems for eight major crops under current and future climate using a global-scale probabilistic machine-learning approach, revealing substantial differences in yield gain probabilities across crop type, management practice, climate zone and geography. It was found that for most crops, conservation agriculture performed better in continental, dry, and temperate regions than in tropical ones, with expectations of increased performance for maize over its tropical areas under future climate conditions.
