Cultural generativity in perspective: motivations of older Jewish volunteers

Eireann O'Dea et al.

Summary: This paper examines motivations to volunteer related to cultural generativity among Jewish older adults. The study finds that motivations for volunteering include preserving and passing down Jewish traditions and teachings, a Jewish ethic of giving back, and experiences of anti-Semitism and discrimination. These findings suggest how cultural generativity can be expressed through volunteerism.

A state-of-the-art review of the socio-ecological correlates of volunteerism among older adults

Peiyi Lu et al.

Summary: The health and social benefits of volunteering behaviors by older adults are well recognized. Motivations for older adults' volunteerism mainly include higher education, social networks, and community cohesion, while health and financial constraints are major barriers. Practitioners are suggested to recruit and manage older volunteers based on their needs, while policy makers should create a supportive environment.
