Change and variability in Antarctic coastal exposure, 1979-2020

P. A. Reid et al.

Summary: Loss of protective sea-ice buffer in Antarctica has led to increased exposure of the coastal environment to open ocean and waves, which has significant effects on ice-shelf stability, coastal erosion, ice-ocean-atmosphere interactions, and shallow benthic ecosystems. Researchers have introduced a climate and environmental metric called Coastal Exposure Length, which measures the daily changes and variability in the length and occurrence of unprotected coastline in Antarctica. The study found that around 50% of Antarctica's 17,850-km coastline had no sea ice offshore each summer, with variations in exposure levels across regions and seasons. From 1979 to 2020, the annual maximum length of coastal exposure decreased by approximately 30 km per year.

The instantaneous impact of calving and thinning on the Larsen C Ice Shelf

Tom Mitcham et al.

Summary: Research shows that changes in the thickness and extent of the Larsen C Ice Shelf have limited instantaneous impact on ice dynamics and grounding line flux. Significant changes to the ice shelf's geometry, such as moving the calving front or thinning the ice shelf, have only a moderate effect on grounding line flux.

Widespread increase in dynamic imbalance in the Getz region of Antarctica from 1994 to 2018

Heather L. Selley et al.

Summary: Research shows that the Getz region of West Antarctica has been losing ice at an increasing rate since 1994, with widespread speedup on most glaciers, leading to significant mass loss over the past 25 years, with dynamic imbalance playing a major role.

Automatic delineation of glacier grounding lines in differential interferometric synthetic-aperture radar data using deep learning

Yara Mohajerani et al.

Summary: The study presents a method for automatically delineating the grounding line of marine-terminating glaciers using a fully-convolutional neural network, efficiently and accompanied by uncertainty estimates. The value of machine learning approach is demonstrated in challenging situations to map grounding lines.

The triggers of the disaggregation of Voyeykov Ice Shelf (2007), Wilkes Land, East Antarctica, and its subsequent evolution

Jennifer F. Arthur et al.

Summary: The study found that the rapid disintegration of the ice tongue in East Antarctica in March to May 2007 was preconditioned by the weakening of structural integrity and triggered by regional atmospheric circulation anomaly and less extensive latent-heat multi-year sea ice. Disaggregation did not lead to inland ice flow acceleration, but highlighted the importance of interactions between sea ice, melange, and ice shelves.

Recent acceleration of Denman Glacier (1972-2017), East Antarctica, driven by grounding line retreat and changes in ice tongue configuration

Bertie W. J. Miles et al.

Summary: Research shows that the Denman Glacier has been accelerating overall since the 1970s, indicating that its recent changes may be related to factors such as grounding line retreat, ice thinning, and ice tongue detachment. Numerical modeling suggests that the Denman Glacier could potentially make a significant contribution to sea level rise in the near future.

Drivers of Pine Island Glacier speed-up between 1996 and 2016

Jan De Rydt et al.

Summary: Pine Island Glacier in West Antarctica has experienced significant ice loss over the past two decades, mainly due to ocean-induced thinning of its floating ice shelf and grounding line retreat. Besides these primary factors, large-scale calving and the plasticity of the bed also play important roles in the glacier's evolution.
