Title: Understanding a Low Vitamin D State in the Context of COVID-19

James Bernard Walsh et al.

Summary: This review examines the association between vitamin D, SARS-CoV-2 infection, and COVID-19 severity. The authors conclude that there is a causal relationship between low vitamin D status and increased risk of infection and severe COVID-19. They suggest that vitamin D supplementation may be beneficial for improving immunity against SARS-CoV-2, especially in vulnerable populations. The study highlights the prevalence of low vitamin D status among Irish adults.

Perspective: Vitamin D deficiency and COVID-19 severity - plausibly linked by latitude, ethnicity, impacts on cytokines, ACE2 and thrombosis

J. M. Rhodes et al.

Summary: There is substantial evidence supporting a link between vitamin D deficiency and COVID-19 severity, although the evidence is indirect. Community-based placebo-controlled trials of vitamin D supplementation may be challenging, but further evidence may come from large cohort studies with prescribing data or serum 25(OH) vitamin D level assays. In the meantime, vitamin D supplementation is strongly recommended for individuals at risk of deficiency.

Serum 25(OH)D Level on Hospital Admission Associated With COVID-19 Stage and Mortality

Dieter De Smet et al.

Summary: Vitamin D deficiency is associated with COVID-19 disease stage and mortality, particularly in male patients, independent of age, ethnicity, and comorbidities. Male patients with COVID-19 showed progressively lower 25(OH)D levels with advancing radiologic stage, and deficiency on admission was associated with increased mortality risk.

Vitamin D Status Is Associated With In-Hospital Mortality and Mechanical Ventilation: A Cohort of COVID-19 Hospitalized Patients

Angeliki M. Angelidi et al.

Summary: A study found an inverse association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and in-hospital mortality and the need for invasive mechanical ventilation in patients admitted with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19. Further observational studies are needed to confirm these findings, and randomized clinical trials should be conducted to assess the role of vitamin D administration in improving the morbidity and mortality of COVID-19.

Summary: This systematic review suggests a significant association between 25(OH)D and SARS-CoV-2 infection, COVID-19 severity, and mortality, although there are inconsistencies in some findings. Evidence regarding ICU admission, inflammation, hospitalization, and pulmonary complications is currently inconsistent and insufficient.

COVID-19 Mortality Risk Correlates Inversely with Vitamin D3 Status, and a Mortality Rate Close to Zero Could Theoretically Be Achieved at 50 ng/mL 25(OH)D3: Results of a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Lorenz Borsche et al.

Summary: Research indicates a negative correlation between D3 levels and COVID-19 mortality rates, suggesting that low D3 levels are a predictor of infection severity. It is recommended to raise serum 25(OH)D levels above 50 ng/mL to prevent or mitigate new outbreaks caused by escape mutations or decreasing antibody activity, despite ongoing vaccinations.

Lack of association of baseline 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels with disease severity and mortality in Indian patients hospitalized for COVID-19

Ganesh Jevalikar et al.

Summary: The study found that there was no significant difference in clinical outcomes or mortality between COVID-19 hospitalized patients with Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and those without VDD, and serum 25-OHD levels did not correlate with inflammatory markers. Treatment with cholecalciferol for VDD did not impact outcomes.
