Dependence of the ZrO2 growth on the crystal orientation: growth simulations and magnetron sputtering

Jiri Houska et al.

Summary: The growth of crystalline ZrO2 is influenced by the energy of arriving atoms, with higher energy Zr atoms being more effective in promoting the growth of (001) orientation. Experimental results show that substrate bias voltage, ion concentration, and synchronization of pulsed bias voltage with heavy Zr+ ion arrival all play a role in the preference for certain orientations, which is important for technological applications.

Phase and photoluminescence analysis of dual-color emissive Eu3+-doped ZrO2 nanoparticles for advanced security features in anti-counterfeiting

Abhishek King et al.

Summary: In this study, low concentration dual-color emissive Eu3+-doped ZrO2 nanoparticles were developed via precipitation method. Different phases of Eu3+-doped zirconia phosphors were found to induce variation in photoluminescence characteristics, affecting the color emission and asymmetric ratio. This research provides insights into the potential use of these materials for advanced security in anti-counterfeiting applications.

Microstructuring technology for large and cylindrical receivers for concentrated solar plants (CSP)

M. Hochedel et al.

Summary: This paper presents an innovative fabrication process for microstructured spectrally selective solar absorbers, suitable for use in concentrated solar power plants. The authors describe the technologies and methods used to microstructure large areas and non-conventional substrates, as well as the deposition of absorbing and anti-reflection coatings using industrial vacuum deposition equipment. The design and assessment of efficiency of the microstructure absorbing layers on smaller planar substrates are also discussed, assuming optical performances are similar to larger substrates.

Direct liquid injection chemical vapor deposition of ZrO2 films from a heteroleptic Zr precursor: interplay between film characteristics and corrosion protection of stainless steel

Sebastian M. J. Beer et al.

Summary: The study presents the direct liquid injection chemical vapor deposition (DLI-CVD) of uniform and dense zirconium oxide (ZrO2) thin films for corrosion protection coatings (CPCs), with focus on varying deposition temperature to improve CPC performance. Thorough analysis revealed that ZrO2 coatings processed at 400 degrees Celsius showed enhanced properties compared to those processed at higher temperatures, providing valuable insights for future exploration of CPCs.

Biocompatibility and electrochemical evaluation of ZrO2 thin films deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering on MgZnCa alloy

Benjamin Millan-Ramos et al.

Summary: In this study, ZrO2 thin films were deposited by magnetron sputtering on a Mg-Zn-Ca alloy to reduce its degradation rate and improve biocompatibility, cell adhesion, and proliferation. The 380 nm ZrO2 coating showed promising results in reducing degradation and H-2 evolution of the alloy in the initial 3 days after immersion, while allowing long-term degradation of the bare alloy. The ZrO2 coating also prevented the adhesion and biofilm formation of S. aureus.
