Non-cube-on-cube orientation relationship between M23C6 and austenite in an austenitic stainless steel

Guanghui Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the crystallographic orientation relationship between M23C6 carbides and austenite in lightweight high carbon stainless steel. The findings showed an orientation relationship approximated by the Kurdjumov-Sachs (K-S) orientation relationship between the carbides and the austenitic matrix, deviating from the commonly reported cube-on-cube orientation relationship, which could be explained by the formation of M23C6 carbides via M7C3 carbides as an intermediate phase.

M7C3: The story of a misunderstood carbide

E. Eshed et al.

Summary: In this study, the hexagonal structure of M7C3-type carbides and the occupancy of a previously considered vacant site by a carbon atom in its atomic structure were experimentally confirmed. Co-existence of two variants in the atomic structure, which explains the preference for this structure over the orthorhombic one, was also discovered. This research is significant for controlling the growth, stability, and performance of (Cr,Fe)(7)C-3 carbides.

A Review of Circular Economy Prospects for Stainless Steelmaking Slags

Lauri Holappa et al.

Summary: The world produced 52 million tons of stainless steel in 2019, with an estimated 15-17 million tons of slags generated annually from various processes. Most of these slags are not utilized, with a significant portion ending up in landfills. Implementing circular economy solutions for stainless steel slags could have significant economic and environmental impacts.

Summary: In this study, a new precipitation hardenable stainless steel modified primarily with Ni and Mn was designed using Thermo-Calc, resulting in improved mechanical properties after heat treatment. The evolution of Cu-precipitate was identified as the main factor causing changes in hardness and mechanical properties.

Multi-scale study on the heterogeneous deformation behavior in duplex stainless steel

Xiao Zhang et al.

Summary: The heterogeneous deformation behavior of austenite and ferrite in 2205 duplex stainless steel is triggered by the yielding of austenite. As the strain increases, the interaction between austenite and ferrite becomes considerable, leading to back stress and forward stress generated by the pile-up of dislocations.

Grain size altering yielding mechanisms in ultrafine grained high-Mn austenitic steel: Advanced TEM investigations

Chang-Yu Hung et al.

Summary: The study found a close correlation between plastic deformation mechanisms and grain size in UFG high-Mn austenitic TWIP steel, where the main mechanism shifts from conventional slip in the grain interior to twinning nucleated from grain boundaries when the grain size is less than 1 μm. This transition is deeply associated with the discontinuous yielding behavior observed in the material.

Aluminum-alloyed lightweight stainless steels strengthened by B2-(Ni, Fe)Al precipitates

M. Harwarth et al.

Summary: The age hardenability of Al-alloyed lightweight stainless steels with different Ni concentrations was studied, showing significant impact on microstructures and hardening response. Hardness measurements indicated significant hardening at 350 degrees Celsius, while tensile elongation in the aged condition was negatively influenced by soft ferrite regions. Guidelines for the development of a new family of lightweight precipitation-hardenable steels were provided.
