The Influence of Age, Eating a Meal, and Systematic Fatigue on Swallowing and Mealtime Parameters

Danielle Brates et al.

Summary: This study explored the effects of eating on tongue strength, endurance, and other parameters of swallowing function, finding that intentional tongue fatigue significantly reduces tongue pressure, especially in older adults. Additionally, the research observed that eating a meal decreases anterior tongue strength and saliva swallow pressures in older participants, while saliva swallow pressures increased post-meal in younger participants.

Survey of Clinician Perspectives and Practices Regarding Swallowing-Related Fatigue

Danielle Brates et al.

Summary: This study revealed wide variability in how clinicians currently define and evaluate swallowing-related fatigue, despite the majority considering fatigue to be an important factor in dysphagia evaluation. There is a critical gap in standardized methods for assessing fatigue in clinical evaluation of swallowing that needs further study to guide clinical practice.
