Evidence for distinct isotopic compositions of sap and tissue water in tree stems: consequences for plant water source identification

Adria Barbeta et al.

Summary: Recent studies challenge the hypothesis that the isotopic composition of plant stem water reflects that of source water, with findings of isotopic offsets in woody stems. This study demonstrates that sap water in plant stems mirrors the composition of irrigation water, with no isotopic fractionation during root water uptake, but water in nonconductive xylem tissues is consistently depleted in deuterium. Micrometre-scale heterogeneity in water isotopes within woody stems and soil micro-pores explains source-stem isotopic offsets.

Water use patterns differed notably with season and slope aspect for Caragana korshinskii on the Loess Plateau of China

Zhixue Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the water use patterns of Caragana korshinskii on shady and sunny slopes on the Loess Plateau in China, focusing on the influences of season and slope aspect. Results showed that plants on sunny slopes tended to absorb water from shallower soil layers compared to plants on shady slopes. This seasonal switch in water sources has implications for the vulnerability of vegetation to future climatic changes.

A δ2H offset correction method for quantifying root water uptake of riparian trees

Yue Li et al.

Summary: Root water uptake is essential in the water cycle, and stable isotopes are effective tools for studying the sources of water uptake in plants. The study introduces the PWL method to correct for delta H-2 offsets and improve interpretations of water utilization. Results show that different input data methods can significantly impact the understanding of seasonal water uptake patterns in riparian trees.

Climatic Warming and Humidification in the Arid Region of Northwest China: Multi-Scale Characteristics and Impacts on Ecological Vegetation

Qiang Zhang et al.

Summary: The study shows a significant increase in temperature and precipitation in the arid region of Northwest China over the past 60 years, leading to a decrease in dryness index and intensifying humidification. These climatic warming and humidification trends generally promote the growth of ecological vegetation.
