Summary: The study found that injecting 2.5 mL of bupivacaine 0.25% with fentanyl 8 mu g center dot mL(-1) every 20 minutes during the first stage of labor can produce effective analgesia. Additionally, there is no significant advantage in using this regimen compared to literature reports using the same dose of bupivacaine at concentrations of 0.0625% and 0.125%.

The effect of programmed intermittent epidural bolus compared with continuous epidural infusion in labor analgesia with ropivacaine: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Summary: This meta-analysis found that PIEB regime with ropivacaine significantly improved maternal satisfaction, reduced consumption of ropivacaine, and shortened the second stage of labor compared to CEI regime. PIEB also decreased the incidence of motor block without increasing other side effects, indicating greater safety for both fetus and maternity.
