3D k-space reflectance fluorescence tomography via deep learning

Navid Ibtehaj Nizam et al.

Summary: This study reports on the potential of using deep learning for image reconstruction in 3D k-space reflectance fluorescence tomography (FT). A modified AUTOMAP architecture and a training methodology using an open-source Monte-Carlo-based simulator are adopted to generate a large dataset. The results indicate that the proposed approach can accurately reconstruct single and multiple fluorescent embeddings in a 3D volume, surpassing traditional approaches, particularly at greater depths.

Deep learning in macroscopic diffuse optical imaging

Jason T. Smith et al.

Summary: This article provides a comprehensive review of the use of deep learning (DL) in macroscopic diffuse optical imaging (DOI). It introduces DL in layman terms and summarizes the current DL work in some active areas of DOI, including optical properties retrieval, fluorescence lifetime imaging, and diffuse optical tomography. The results show numerous advantages of using DL for DOI compared to conventional inverse solvers, such as a decrease in analysis time, increased reconstruction quality, robustness to noise, and the capability to learn complex end-to-end relationships. The heavily validated capability of DL has enormous potential to bring novel DOI modalities to the patient's bedside.

In vitro and in vivo NIR fluorescence lifetime imaging with a time-gated SPAD camera

Jason T. Smith et al.

Summary: SwissSPAD2, a large time-gated single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) camera, has been demonstrated to be suitable for in vivo near-infrared fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLI) measurements. It shows excellent performance in well-controlled in vitro experiments and has been successfully applied to in vivo studies of target-drug engagement in deep tissues.

Luminescence lifetime imaging of three-dimensional biological objects

Ruslan Dmitriev et al.

Summary: Luminescence lifetime imaging offers a unique window into the physiological and structural environment of cells and tissues, enabling a new level of functional and molecular analysis. It provides rich information on cell metabolism, protein-protein interaction networks, and other physiological parameters at multiple scales. The technology allows for 3D spatially resolved and longitudinal measurements ranging from microscopic to macroscopic scale.

Summary: Mehmet S. Ozturk et al. present an intravital mesoscopic fluorescence tomography (IFT) technique that is capable of tracking fluorescently labeled tumor cells inside living mice over several months. It demonstrates a promising new method for studying tumor growth dynamics in a quantitative and longitudinal fashion in-vivo.

Accelerating vasculature imaging in tumor using mesoscopic fluorescence molecular tomography via a hybrid reconstruction strategy

Fugang Yang et al.

Summary: Mesoscopic fluorescent molecular tomography (MFMT) is a method for imaging fluorescent molecular probes beyond the depth limits of microscopic imaging. This paper proposes a hybrid approach combining a convolutional symmetric network and a conventional iterative algorithm to accelerate the reconstruction procedure and improve accuracy. The results show that reconstruction accuracy and speed are significantly improved using this method.
