DeFusionNET: Defocus Blur Detection via Recurrently Fusing and Refining Discriminative Multi-Scale Deep Features

Chang Tang et al.

Summary: In this paper, a deep neural network called DeFusionNet is proposed for defocus blur detection. DeFusionNet addresses challenges such as background clutter interference, scale sensitivity, and missing boundary details of blur regions by recurrently fusing and refining multi-scale deep features. The network incorporates feature adaptation and channel attention modules to narrow the gap between low-level and high-level features and select discriminative features for feature refinement. Extensive experiments on multiple datasets demonstrate the efficacy and efficiency of DeFusionNet.

Knowledge distillation-based deep learning classification network for peripheral blood leukocytes

Bing Leng et al.

Summary: This study proposes a deep learning framework using knowledge distillation method for leukocyte classification. Large models are first pre-trained on a mixed leukocyte dataset using either convolutional neural networks or Transformer structure. Then, the dark knowledge of the pre-trained models is extracted through knowledge distillation, and small models are trained. The best performing small model is selected as the final prediction model, achieving high accuracy on a mixed dataset. The proposed framework also outperforms other methods on the enhanced BCCD dataset.

In vivo quantitative analysis of anterior chamber white blood cell mixture composition using spectroscopic optical coherence tomography

Ruobing Qian et al.

Summary: Anterior uveitis is the most common form of intraocular inflammation characterized by the presence of white blood cells in the anterior chamber. A spectroscopic optical coherence tomography (SOCT) analysis method has been developed to differentiate different types of white blood cells and estimate the composition of blood cell mixtures. The method shows promise in providing quantitative diagnostic information of cellular responses in patients with uveitis.

Digital holographic deep learning of red blood cells for field-portable, rapid COVID-19 screening

Timothy O'Connor et al.

Summary: This study presents a rapid screening method for COVID-19 infection in red blood cells using a compact, field-portable 3D-printed shearing digital holographic microscope. By analyzing the spatiotemporal behavior of individual red blood cells, a bi-directional long short-term memory network is used to classify between healthy and COVID positive red blood cells. The proposed system may benefit under-resourced healthcare systems.
