Characteristics of Li-ion micro batteries fully batch fabricated by micro-fluidic MEMS packaging

Robert Hahn et al.

Summary: A cost-effective and reliable technology has been developed to miniaturize batteries into glass chips and electronic packages. Lithium-ion micro-batteries were fabricated using a dispense-print process and compared to traditional stacked electrodes. The use of interdigitated electrodes allowed for easier fabrication and similar performance to conventional configurations.

A Flexible Aqueous Zinc-Iodine Microbattery with Unprecedented Energy Density

Xuting Jin et al.

Summary: An in situ electrodeposition strategy is used to construct a flexible aqueous zinc-iodine microbattery (ZIDMB), which simplifies the manufacturing process and achieves high volumetric and areal energy densities. By suppressing the shuttle effect of triiodide ions and improving the ionic conductivity, the ZIDMB exhibits significantly better performance than current best available aqueous microbatteries.

On-Chip Batteries for Dust-Sized Computers

Yang Li et al.

Summary: Advancements in microelectronics have allowed for the development of miniaturized computers with autonomous intelligence, but the issue of size mismatch between microbatteries and microelectronics poses a significant barrier. The concept of micro-origami aims to address this issue by reducing the footprint area of batteries, mimicking successful full-sized battery manufacturing processes. The Perspective also emphasizes the two basic requirements for integration into microcomputers: minimum energy density and monolithic integration with other functional circuits on the chip.

A Patternable and In Situ Formed Polymeric Zinc Blanket for a Reversible Zinc Anode in a Skin-Mountable Microbattery

Minshen Zhu et al.

Summary: The study presents a technique using a polyimide coating to solve the capacity loss issue of zinc anodes in an acid electrolyte. The polyimide coordinates with zinc ions to build a zinc blanket, reducing the concentration gradient at the electrode/electrolyte interface for fast kinetics and low plating/stripping overpotential.

Electrochemical Modeling of GITT Measurements for Improved Solid-State Diffusion Coefficient Evaluation

Jeffrey S. Horner et al.

Summary: The galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) is commonly used to evaluate solid-state diffusion coefficients in electrochemical systems, but existing analysis methods have limitations in validating the derived diffusion coefficients. Researchers employed a direct-pulse fitting method to interpret GITT data and found that non-ideal diffusion coefficients were significantly more accurate than ideal ones extracted using conventional methods. This study also demonstrated the validity of a single-particle approach when the modeled radius is proportional to the total volume-to-surface-area ratio of the system.
