Strong Metal-Support Interaction Boosts Activity, Selectivity, and Stability in Electrosynthesis of H2O2

Junming Zhang et al.

Summary: Noble metals play a crucial role in electrochemical reactions, but their usage is limited due to high overpotential and poor stability. By modulating strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) through mechanical milling, the overall performance of Pd electrocatalysts has been improved in terms of activity, selectivity, and stability. This approach can also be extended to other noble metal systems, showing great promise for the large-scale production of highly stable and tunable electrocatalysts.

Atomically dispersed Ir/α-MoC catalyst with high metal loading and thermal stability for water-promoted hydrogenation reaction

Siwei Li et al.

Summary: The atomically dispersed Ir/alpha-MoC catalyst with high metal loading shows remarkable activity, selectivity, and stability for quinoline hydrogenation through a water-promoted hydrogenation mechanism. The strong interaction between Ir and alpha-MoC substrate enables high dispersion of Ir on the surface, leading to high reactivity and selectivity. The synthesis of high-loading atomically dispersed catalyst is a new strategy for efficient hydrogenation reactions.

Modification of the Electrochemical Surface Oxide Formation and the Hydrogen Oxidation Activity of Ruthenium by Strong Metal Support Interactions

Bjoern M. Stuehmeier et al.

Summary: The commercialization of PEMFCs and water electrolyzers is hindered by the durability and high cost of noble metal catalysts. Alternative support materials can alter the properties of a catalyst through SMSI, which can prevent platinum oxidation and suppress oxygen reduction. This study reports a novel Ru/TiOx/C catalyst with partially encapsulated Ru particles in a Ru/TiOx-composite matrix supported on a carbon support. After reductive heat-treatment, the catalyst shows improved stability and activity for the hydrogen oxidation reaction compared to a reference catalyst.

In Situ Strong Metal-Support Interaction (SMSI) Affects Catalytic Alcohol Conversion

Felipe Polo-Garzon et al.

Summary: The study reveals that during the catalytic conversion of 2-propanol on Pd/TiO2 at low temperatures, coverage of Pd sites occurs due to the generation of SMSIs. The SMSIs that appear during the reaction fully reverse upon exposure to O-2 at room temperature, which may have contributed to the challenge of identifying them in the past.
