Effect of Membrane Properties on the Carbonation of Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Yiwei Zheng et al.

Summary: Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFC) are low-cost alternatives to proton exchange membrane fuel cells, but they suffer from significant performance loss when exposed to CO2 due to carbonation. This study found that the ionic conductivity of the AEM plays a critical role in CO2-related voltage loss, with higher conductivity leading to faster CO2 migration and emission. As AEMFCs become more carbonated, their water content decreases, further decreasing cell performance.
