Selective Reduction of Carboxylic Acids to Alcohols in the Presence of Alcohols by a Dual Bulky Transition-Metal Complex/Lewis Acid Catalyst

Bendik Gromer et al.

Summary: We have developed a molecular method that can selectively reduce carboxylic acids to a diverse range of alcohols. This method overcomes the common issue of ester formation during the direct hydrogenation of carboxylic acids to alcohols, by using a bulky iridium catalyst and a Lewis acid.

Development of Effective Bidentate Diphosphine Ligands of Ruthenium Catalysts toward Practical Hydrogenation of Carboxylic Acids

Shota Yoshioka et al.

Summary: The study focused on modifying the structure of bidentate diphosphine (PP) ligands to achieve higher catalytic activity in carboxylic acid hydrogenation, leading to significantly increased activity and durability of the (PP)Ru catalyst compared to other molecular Ru catalyst systems. The approach used in this study could benefit further advancements in carboxylic acid self-induced hydrogenation.
