Complex Ecotype Dynamics Evolve in Response to Fluctuating Resources

Megan G. Behringer et al.

Summary: Despite regular feast and famine conditions, the evolutionary outcomes of repeated cycles of feast and famine have been less studied. By experimentally evolving isogenic Escherichia coli populations to 10-day feast/famine cycles, rapid diversification into ecotypes with bidirectional cross-feeding and frequency-dependent fitness was observed. These results provide insight into how cooperative relationships may emerge in natural microbial communities.

Evolutionary Dynamics of Asexual Hypermutators Adapting to a Novel Environment

Wei-Chin Ho et al.

Summary: The study found that, although high mutation rate populations have higher genomic evolution rates, their levels of adaptation improvement are similar to wild-type populations, suggesting that the relationship between mutation rate and adaptive evolution rate may not be positively correlated. Through genome analysis, it can be seen that although there are strong genetic linkage effects, the evolved population shows parallelism in fixed mutations.

The rate and molecular spectrum of mutation are selectively maintained in yeast

Haoxuan Liu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the mutation rate substantially exceeds the drift barrier in various organisms, indicating that stabilizing selection plays a key role in maintaining the mutation rate above the drift barrier, and the formation of mutation spectrum is also selectively preserved. These findings suggest the possibility of alleviating mutagenesis in various organisms through genome editing.
