Uneven spatial sampling distorts reconstructions of Phanerozoic seawater temperature

Lewis A. Jones et al.

Summary: Paleotemperature proxy records are widely used to reconstruct global climate history and test macroevolutionary hypotheses. However, the spatial distribution of these records varies over time, leading to potential biases in reconstructed temperature curves. Our study evaluated the influence of this spatial sampling evolution and found that global paleotemperature is overestimated in around 70% of stages.

Common mistakes in ecological niche models

Neftali Sillero et al.

Summary: After teaching and reviewing manuscripts on ecological niche models, we found common mistakes such as treating presence-background modelling methods as pseudo-absence methods and confusing spatial autocorrelation with clustering of species records. Some errors arise from students' misunderstandings and are corrected before publication, while others can be found in published papers.

Climatic drivers of latitudinal variation in Late Triassic tetrapod diversity

Emma M. Dunne et al.

Summary: The study found that Late Triassic tetrapods show highest diversity at mid-latitudes, while the richness of pseudosuchians is highest at the paleoequator, and this pattern is retained throughout their subsequent evolutionary history. Pseudosuchians generally occupied a more restricted range of palaeoclimatic conditions, similar to modern reptilian ectotherms, while avemetatarsalians exhibit wider ranges, similar to modern endotherms, such as birds and mammals, suggesting important implications for the evolution of thermal physiology in dinosaurs.

Influence of spatial extent on habitat suitability models for primate species of Atlantic Forest

Vagner Lacerda Vasquez et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the influence of spatial extent definition on habitat suitability modeling for primate species in the Atlantic Forest, finding that suitability frequency distributions vary with different extents and that extents can also impact the distribution area obtained from these models.

Spatial sampling heterogeneity limits the detectability of deep time latitudinal biodiversity gradients

Lewis A. Jones et al.

Summary: The latitudinal biodiversity gradient is a pervasive pattern of the modern biosphere, but it is influenced by geological and anthropogenic biases. Spatial sampling heterogeneity impacts the detectability of genuine gradients, with sampling-standardization aiding in the reconstruction of relative gradients but unable to address artefactual absences introduced by biases.
