Lactobacillus casei Zhang exerts anti-obesity effect to obese glut1 and gut-specific-glut1 knockout mice via gut microbiota modulation mediated different metagenomic pathways

Qiuwen He et al.

Summary: Abrogating gut epithelial GLUT1 activity affects gut microbiota, fat mass accumulation, and glucose tolerance, while LCZ administration reduces fat mass accumulation and central obesity. Probiotic administration significantly impacts body weight, fat accumulation, and gut microbiota modulation, thus playing a role in anti-obesity effect. Probiotic-mediated anti-obesity effect is linked to specific members of the Bacteroides genera, Odoribacter genera, and Alistipes finegoldii.

The microbiome in inflammatory bowel diseases: from pathogenesis to therapy

Sheng Liu et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a global disease with accelerating incidence worldwide, and dysbiosis of gut microbiota has been consistently associated with IBD. Some alterations in microbiome may have protective or causative effects on IBD. Therapeutic approaches targeting microbiome are a promising strategy for alleviating and curing IBD.

Adjunctive treatment with probiotics partially alleviates symptoms and reduces inflammation in patients with irritable bowel syndrome

Haiyan Xu et al.

Summary: This study found that adjunctive use of probiotics with a routine regimen for IBS management showed additional clinical effectiveness compared to using the routine regimen alone. The probiotic adjunctive treatment significantly decreased IBS symptom severity score, levels of harmful bacterial genera, and levels of beneficial bacterial genera in IBS patients.

Bidirectional brain-gut axis effects influence mood and prognosis in IBD: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Keeley M. Fairbrass et al.

Summary: The review of 12 studies found that baseline anxiety or depression symptoms were associated with adverse outcomes in IBD patients, while active disease was linked to future development of anxiety or depression. This suggests bidirectional effects of the brain-gut axis in IBD, influencing both disease progression and psychological health.

Untargeted fecal metabolomics revealed biochemical mechanisms of the blood lipid-lowering effect of koumiss treatment in patients with hyperlipidemia

Bohai Li et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the biochemical mechanism of the lipid-lowering effect of consuming koumiss daily by analyzing the fecal metabolomes of hyperlipidemia patients before and after koumiss treatment. Ten significant differential metabolites were detected, showing increased concentrations at days 30 and 60, many of which were involved in lipid metabolism and transport. The metabolites identified were likely associated with the observed lipid-lowering effect.

Treatment with mixed probiotics induced, enhanced and diversified modulation of the gut microbiome of healthy rats

Qiuwen He et al.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that multi-strain probiotics have stronger effects on regulating gut microbiota and enhancing mucosal barrier compared to single-strain probiotics. The use of mixed probiotics induced more drastic and diversified modulation of gut microbiota, while single-strain probiotics treatments tended to converge gut microbiota. Additionally, the responses to multi-strain probiotics treatment were more heterogeneous, indicating that personalized response to probiotic formulas should be considered due to individual variations in gut microbial compositions.
