The tubular striatum and nucleus accumbens distinctly represent reward-taking and reward-seeking

Summary: The NAc and TuS subregions of the ventral striatum distinctly represent reward-taking and reward-seeking behaviors. TuS neurons show greater changes in firing during reward-taking and extinction, while NAc neurons show greater changes during cue-induced reward-seeking. TuS neural activity predicts reward-seeking behavior, while NAc activity does not in the tested behavioral paradigm.

Neural processing of the reward value of pleasant odorants

Summary: Pleasant odorants in mice's posterior olfactory bulb (pOB) can generate reward and self-motivated behaviors when stimulated, accompanied by ventral tegmental area activation. The pOB preferentially projects to the olfactory tubercle, enhancing odorant attraction, and attractive odorants act as reinforcers in dopamine-dependent place preference learning. In humans, place preference learning and increased BOLD signal in the olfactory tubercle in response to attractive odorants suggests a direct link from pOB to the reward system driving strong and persistent attraction.

Optogenetic activation of OT D3 neurons robustly initiates self-grooming in mice while suppressing other ongoing behaviors, while their inhibition halts ongoing grooming.
