Detection of Saint Louis encephalitis virus in two Brazilian states

Marilia M. Moraes et al.

Summary: During outbreaks of Dengue and Zika viruses in two Brazilian states, circulation of Saint Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) was observed. Phylogenetic analysis placed the samples from this study within genotype V, which is closely related to strains previously circulating in other parts of the country. Genotype V appears to have established circulation in Brazil.

Chikungunya virus ECSA lineage reintroduction in the northeasternmost region of Brazil

Joilson Xavier et al.

Summary: In 2019, the Northeast region of Brazil experienced a significant outbreak of Chikungunya fever, linking it to increased incidence in the Southeast region the previous year. Research indicates that the virus spread across the country through interregional importation events, likely facilitated by human mobility.

Serologic evidence of West Nile virus and Saint Louis encephalitis virus in horses from Southern Brazil

Summary: The study analyzed horse serum samples for flaviviruses in Southern Brazil, with low seroprevalences of SLEV and WNV detected. The results underscore the importance for public health professionals to be aware of the presence of these potential zoonotic pathogens.

Field and classroom initiatives for portable sequence-based monitoring of dengue virus in Brazil

Talita Emile Ribeiro Adelino et al.

Summary: Brazil faced a significant dengue virus epidemic in 2019, and through the use of Oxford Nanopore sequencing, researchers successfully monitored and generated 227 novel genome sequences of DENV1-2 from 85 municipalities. The study revealed complex transmission patterns of DENV1-2, with lineage co-circulation and replacement, and estimated effective reproduction numbers and patterns of seasonality for two lineages within the DENV2 BR-4 clade. The surveillance outputs and training initiatives presented here demonstrate the potential of real-time portable sequencing for genomic surveillance of emerging viruses.

West Nile Virus in the State of Ceara, Northeast Brazil

Flavia Lowen Levy Chalhoub et al.

Summary: In June 2019, a horse in Boa Viagem, Brazil was diagnosed with West Nile virus (WNV), prompting a multi-institutional task force to investigate. No active circulation of WNV was detected in vertebrates or mosquitoes, but previous exposure was confirmed in domestic birds and other species. The detection of neutralizing antibodies in free-ranging birds suggests they may have been involved in local transmission cycles of WNV.

West Nile Virus in Brazil

Erica Azevedo Costa et al.

Summary: The study found new genetic evidence of WNV circulation in southern and northeastern states of Brazil, with a climate-informed theoretical perspective highlighting the potential transmission pathways. The scarcity of existing data on WNV in Brazil and the need for active surveillance to prepare for future epidemics with human spill-over potential were also emphasized.

Evidence for current circulation of an ancient West Nile virus strain (NY99) in Brazil

Marcio Junio Lima Siconelli et al.

Summary: In Brazil, the first cases of West Nile virus infection in horses were reported in 2018, with this study detailing cases from Ceara and Espirito Santo states in 2019. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the isolates belong to lineage 1a, clustering with the NY99 strain that has not circulated in the USA since 2005. These findings suggest that West Nile virus has been silently circulating in Brazil for many years.

Serosurvey of West Nile virus (WNV) in free-ranging raptors from Brazil

Ana Paula Morel et al.

Summary: This study in Southern Brazil sampled 200 wild raptors, finding that 5% of the birds tested positive for WNV antibodies, while no Flavivirus RNA was detected. The results highlight the need for ongoing surveillance for emerging flaviviruses in Brazil and contingency policies for outbreaks in high-risk areas.
