Establishment and characterization of a permanent heart cell line from largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides and its application to fish virology and immunology

Weiwei Zeng et al.

Summary: A permanent cell line (MSH) was established from the heart tissue of largemouth bass, which showed optimal growth conditions and karyotypes suitable for genetic studies. The MSH cells demonstrated susceptibility to various fish viruses and can be utilized for future studies in genetics, virology, and immunology.

Rapid visual detection of Micropterus salmoides rhabdovirus using recombinase polymerase amplification combined with lateral flow dipsticks

Zizhao Feng et al.

Summary: This study developed three rapid detection methods based on RPA and LFD for Micropterus salmoides rhabdovirus (MSRV) in largemouth bass, an important freshwater-cultured species in China. These methods exhibited high sensitivity, reliability, and specificity, and can be conveniently used for on-site diagnosis, improving the field detection of MSRV and enhancing the production of largemouth bass.

Revised Taxonomy of Rhabdoviruses Infecting Fish and Marine Mammals

Peter J. Walker et al.

Summary: The Rhabdoviridae is a family of viruses that includes important pathogens of fish and marine mammals. The taxonomic classification of fish viruses in this family has been recently reviewed and new subfamilies and virus species have been assigned. However, there is a taxonomic conundrum regarding the classification of fish rhabdoviruses in the genus Novirhabdovirus within the family Rhabdoviridae.

Determination and Characterization of a Novel Birnavirus Associated with Massive Mortality in Largemouth Bass

Xiaozhe Fu et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel largemouth bass Birnavirus (LBBV) associated with massive mortality in largemouth bass was isolated, determined, and characterized. The genome of LBBV was analyzed, and based on phylogenetic and alignment analysis, LBBV was suggested to belong to a new genus in the Birnaviridae family. These findings provide a basis for further study on prevention and control of this emerging viral disease.

First detection of infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV) associated with massive mortalities in farmed tilapia in Africa

Jose Gustavo Ramirez-Paredes et al.

Summary: The study identified ISKNV as the primary cause of fish mortality in tilapia aquaculture farms around Lake Volta in Ghana, with the disease being endemic by July 2019. Additionally, the absence of TiLV and nodavirus in the samples suggests a different disease mechanism.

MiRNA-seq analysis of spleen and head kidney tissue from aquacultured largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) in response to Aeromonas hydrophila infection

Jian Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found that miRNAs play an important role in the immune response of largemouth bass, affecting immune response and cell cycle functions by regulating target genes in the FoxO signaling pathway. These results help to further explore the molecular mechanisms underlying bacterial septicemia and facilitate the molecular-assisted selection of resistant strains of largemouth bass.

Kandasamy Saravanan et al.

Summary: The study identified a high rate of co-infection of IHHNV and WSSV in wild crustaceans from Andaman and Nicobar Archipelago, India, with certain shrimp and crab species more prone to co-infection. The nucleotide sequences of the viruses obtained from crab samples showed high similarity with counterparts from other countries, indicating potential cross-border transmission.
