Phlebovirus-associated diseases transmitted by phlebotominae in Spain: Are we at risk?

Lucia Garcia San Miguel et al.

Summary: Phlebovirus genus viruses transmitted by Diptera of the Psychodidae family cause self limited febrile syndrome in the Mediterranean basin. Viruses like Toscana virus can also lead to meningitis and meningoencephalitis. In Spain, various viruses have been detected, with the risk of regular human infections considered moderate for Toscana virus and low for others, particularly in areas with high vector activity.

Opportunistic feeding behaviour and Leishmania infantum detection in Phlebotomus perniciosus females collected in the human leishmaniasis focus of Madrid, Spain (2012-2018)

Estela Gonzalez et al.

Summary: An outbreak of human leishmaniasis has been registered in an urban area of southwestern Madrid, Spain since 2010. Intensive molecular surveillance of the sand fly vector Phlebotomus perniciosus showed its opportunistic blood-feeding behavior, high infection rates, and the importance of applying molecular surveillance in vector-borne disease outbreaks. The results supported the implementation of control measures in the affected region.
