Changes in fecal short-chain fatty acids following fecal microbiota transplantation in patients with irritable bowel syndrome

Magdy El-Salhy et al.

Summary: This study found that FMT can increase the fecal SCFA levels in IBS patients. The increase in butyric acid is negatively correlated with symptoms in IBS patients, suggesting that SCFAs may play a role in the pathophysiology of IBS.

Strain-specific and outcome-specific efficacy of probiotics for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Lynne McFarland et al.

Summary: After screening 521 studies, 42 randomized controlled trials were included in this study, with 4 probiotics showing significant reduction in abdominal pain, particularly B. coagulans MTCC5260. Mild-moderate adverse events were reported in 51% of the trials, but none were more associated with the probiotics compared to controls.

Multi-targeted properties of the probiotic saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-3856 against enterotoxigenic escherichia coli (ETEC) H10407 pathogenesis across human gut models

Charlene Roussel et al.

Summary: The research demonstrated significant inhibitory effects of the probiotic Saccharomyces cerevisiae against Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC), reducing virulence gene expression and enterotoxin production, while promoting the growth of beneficial bacterial populations and metabolic activity in different gut regions. Moreover, the probiotic-preconditioned microbiota showed higher resilience and stability against ETEC challenge.
