Silica Shell Growth on Vitreophobic Gold Nanoparticles Probed by Plasmon Resonance Dynamics

Christian Engelbrekt et al.

Summary: The early stages of silica deposition on vitreophobic citrate-capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were studied using in situ optical spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and hydrodynamic size measurements. The time-dependent surface plasmon resonance was analyzed to reveal three distinct stages of uniform silica shell formation on AuNPs, with the first stage characterized by an increase in silica plasmon and anisotropic silica growth from the vertices before forming conformal shells.
