Borrelia Ocular Infection: A Case Report and a Systematic Review of Published Cases

Bjoern E. Lindstrom et al.

Summary: This study provides evidence of ocular infection by Borrelia species and highlights the importance of looking for Borrelia in eye tissue samples. Microscopy alone is insufficient to confirm the diagnosis of ocular borreliosis. There is currently no unanimous recommendation for treatment.

Molecular detection and identification of piroplasms (Babesiaspp. andTheileriaspp.) andAnaplasma phagocytophilumin questing ticks from northwest Spain

S. Remesar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of pathogens in ticks in north-western Spain, revealing a low percentage of ticks infected with A. phagocytophilum and piroplasms. A potentially human pathogenic variant of A. phagocytophilum was detected, along with zoonotic Babesia species. Further research is needed to determine the role of I. ricinus in the transmission of Theileria sp. OT3.

Red and fallow deer determine the density of Ixodes ricinus nymphs containing Anaplasma phagocytophilum

Katsuhisa Takumi et al.

Summary: The study compared the contributions of red deer, fallow deer, roe deer, and wild boar to Anaplasma phagocytophilum infections in Ixodes ricinus nymphs, finding that red and fallow deer have a higher impact on the risk of contracting anaplasmosis in the Netherlands. The mechanisms behind this association need to be further explored in future studies.

Pathogenic microorganisms in ticks removed from Slovakian residents over the years 2008-2018

Eva Spitalska et al.

Summary: Between 2008 and 2018, a total of 750 ticks feeding on humans were collected, with the majority identified as Ixodes ricinus. These ticks were found to carry various tick-borne bacteria, including pathogenic species such as Rickettsia and Borrelia.

Summary: The study demonstrates high infection levels and diverse genospecies of Borrelia in questing ticks in different habitats in Southern Germany. The presence of roe deer appears to reduce infection rates of B. burgdorferi s.l. in tick populations.

Infections with Tickborne Pathogens after Tick Bite, Austria, 2015-2018

Mateusz Markowicz et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the risk of tickborne infections after a tick bite. Findings showed that the risk of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. infection was increased with full engorgement of the tick and confirmation of B. burgdorferi s.l. in the tick by PCR, with a mention of other participants being infected with different pathogens. Additionally, Rickettsia helvetica was abundant in ticks but not pathogenic to humans.
