Out-of-plane deformation reduction via inelastic hinges in fibrous metamaterials and simplified damage approach

Mario Spagnuolo et al.

Summary: The mechanical behavior of fibrous metamaterials is determined by interactions between fibers, which can be direct or mediated by hinges. The torsional stiffness of inelastic hinges can affect out-of-plane deformations in shear tests, potentially leading to permanent deformations after reaching a certain threshold. Damage in the continuum model is introduced to simplify the treatment of this phenomenon.

A non-linear symmetric G1-conforming Bezier finite element formulation for the analysis of Kirchhoff beam assemblies

L. Greco et al.

Summary: The formulation presented in the study addresses Kirchhoff constraints and G(1)-continuity conditions for slender space curved rods and rod assemblies. It is developed in tensorial coordinate free form and involves a symmetric tangent stiffness operator obtained through the second covariant derivative of the internal energy functional. The G(1)-continuity conditions are met through a change of basis, resulting in a specific geometric term in the tangent stiffness matrix. The robustness and accuracy of the Kirchhoff model are demonstrated using numerical examples with Bezier interpolation.

On the statics and dynamics of granular-microstructured rods with higher order effects

Nima Nejadsadeghi et al.

Summary: A micromorphic continuum theory based on granular micromechanics approach for one-dimensional materials with granular microstructure has been derived. The behavior of granular structure under different boundary conditions in static and dynamic problems, as well as the effects of material constants and size effects on the material response, have been investigated. The static problem shows size-dependency in the width of boundary layers, while the dynamic problem shows deviations in natural frequencies due to microstructural effects.
