Effects of Nonaqueous Phase Liquids Pollution on the Permeability and Microstructure of In-Filed and Laboratory Soaked Contaminated Clay Soils

Yanbin Gao et al.

Summary: The permeability and microstructure properties of clay can be changed by NAPL pollution, which has drawn high attention in the study of the interaction between NAPL and contaminated soil. This study investigated the variation of pollutants in clay with depth and the changes in plasticity, permeability, and microstructure properties of clay samples contaminated by specific NAPLs. The results showed that the microstructure characteristics of clay changed under the influence of NAPL content, with an increase in porosity and permeability. The study also found that clay maintained stability and resistance to cracking even under TCE pollution.

Analytical model for degradable contaminant transport through a cutoff wall-aquifer system under time-dependent point source pollution

Xiang-Hong Ding et al.

Summary: A novel two-dimensional analytical model was developed to assess the performance of cutoff walls under time-dependent point source pollution. The service life of a cutoff wall increases exponentially with the decrease of release time for finite pulse point sources, and it increases linearly with the increase of decay coefficient for decay point sources. The hypothesis about the Gaussian distribution of contaminant concentration at the entrance to a cutoff wall is invalid when the point sources are separated by more than 1 m.

Laboratory observations for two-dimensional solute transport in an aquifer-aquitard system

Xu Li et al.

Summary: In this research, experiments were conducted to study the characteristics of groundwater flow and solute transport in a clay-sand two-layer system, where aquitard advection was found to be non-negligible and advective velocities in the sand and clay layers showed temporal variability due to physical and biological clogging. The mixing effect in the pre-inlet reservoir led to lower tracer concentration in the sand layer at early times, and there were early arrivals in the clay layer possibly due to preferential flow pathways, suggesting implications for contamination remediation in aquifer-aquitard systems.

A two-dimensional analytical model for contaminant transport in a finite domain subjected to multiple arbitrary time-dependent point injection sources

Xiang-Hong Ding et al.

Summary: This study establishes a two-dimensional analytical model for contaminant transport involving multiple arbitrary time-dependent point sources. The results show that assuming multiple sources as an equivalent-intensity single point source would significantly undervalue the polluted range in the early stage, while spacing between sources larger than 1 meter would lead to an overestimation of the maximum downstream concentration.
