Assessing inputs of aquaculture-derived nutrients to streams using dissolved organic matter fluorescence

Kevin A. Ryan et al.

Summary: Salmon aquaculture facilities in Chile were found to significantly enrich nutrients such as carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in effluents compared to stream waters. Fluorescence spectroscopy was used to analyze dissolved organic matter in effluents, revealing differences in DOM composition between stream waters and aquaculture effluents. The study suggests that in-situ sensors for monitoring tryptophan-like fluorescence can improve industry management and nutrient monitoring in aquaculture facilities.

How hydrology and anthropogenic activity influence the molecular composition and export of dissolved organic matter: Observations along a large river continuum

Yongqiang Zhou et al.

Summary: Large rivers, such as the Yangtze River, serve as crucial pathways for transporting carbon to the ocean. This study found that urbanization and stormwater periods can increase the export of organic-rich substances and household effluents along the river continuum. The results highlight the importance of protecting the watershed to prevent changes in ecosystem function and carbon cycling due to increased organic carbon loading and altered composition.

Characterization of Dissolved Organic Matter and Its Derived Disinfection Byproduct Formation along the Yangtze River

Chao Fang et al.

Summary: The Yangtze River basin covers a significant portion of China's land area and serves as an important water source for a large population. Variation in dissolved organic matter (DOM) properties along the Yangtze River significantly impacts water treatment and disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation after chlorination. The study reveals different DOM characteristics in the Yangtze River waters, highlighting their influence on DBP formation.

Hydrological management affected dissolved organic matter chemistry and organic carbon burial in the Three Gorges Reservoir

Kai Wang et al.

Summary: This study reveals the impact of human activities on the characteristics of DOM and organic carbon burial in reservoirs, suggesting that hydrological management-induced variation in DOM chemistry could enhance organic carbon burial in reservoirs. Further research is needed to better understand the effects of damming reservoirs on carbon cycling worldwide.
