The contrasting estuarine geochemistry of rare earth elements between ice-covered and ice-free conditions

Duc Huy Dang et al.

Summary: Rare Earth Elements are important tracers in biogeochemical processes, playing a crucial role in water mass transport and oceanic mixing. Studies in the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence found that in winter, REYs and Fe exhibit conservative behavior, in contrast to the non-conservative behavior observed in summer. Additionally, there was a higher affinity of REYs towards particle surfaces in hypoxic deep waters of the estuary.

Endocrine-disruptive chemicals as contaminants of emerging concern in wastewater and surface water: A review

Teddy Kabeya Kasonga et al.

Summary: Population growth and industrial development have led to serious environmental pollution, with EDCs posing harmful effects on human, environmental, and wildlife health. Here, diseases caused by disrupting hormones and potential harm are highlighted. The use of fungal bioreactors as a low-cost, eco-effective wastewater treatment method is emphasized in the research.

Dissolved rubidium to strontium ratio as a conservative tracer for wastewater effluent-sourced contaminant inputs near a major urban wastewater treatment plant

Joseph P. Smith et al.

Summary: Municipal wastewater effluent discharges can negatively impact local ecosystems and human health by introducing contaminants to receiving waters. Gadolinium and dissolved rubidium/strontium ratios have been identified as potential conservative tracers for tracking wastewater-sourced pollutants in urbanized freshwater systems, providing a cost-effective alternative to traditional tracers. Studies have shown that these tracers could be valuable tools in investigating wastewater impacts in different geological settings.
