Continuous removal of sulfate and metals from acidic mining-impacted waters at low temperature using a sulfate-reducing bacterial consortium

Hanna Virpiranta et al.

Summary: This study developed a biological method for the simultaneous removal of sulfate and metals from acidic low-temperature mining effluents using a mixed consortium of cold-tolerant sulfate-reducing bacteria. The experimental results showed that sulfate reduction rates increased with higher initial sulfate concentrations, indicating better adaptability of the sulfate-reducing bacterial consortium at higher sulfate concentrations.

Biological methane production coupled with sulfur oxidation in a microbial electrosynthesis system without organic substrates

Ha T. T. Dinh et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the production of methane at the biocathode in a microbial electrosynthesis system (MES) even at a very low voltage. Microbial community analysis reveals the pathway for methane production via electrotrophic H-2 and subsequent conversion to acetate before being converted to methane by acetoclastic methanogens or via hydrogenotrophic methanogens.

Electrochemical and microbiological response of exoelectrogenic biofilm to polyethylene microplastics in water

Song Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of polyethylene (PE) microplastics on exoelectrogenic biofilm. The experiments reveal that an increase in PE microplastics concentration leads to a decline in current density and abundance of electroactive bacteria in the biofilm. The viability of the biofilm is also restrained by the presence of PE microplastics, resulting in higher system electrode resistance. Furthermore, microbial community richness and expression of electron transfer-related genes decrease after the addition of microplastics.

An enhanced excess sludge fermentation process by anthraquinone-2-sulfonate as electron shuttles for the biorefinery of zero-carbon hydrogen

Liguo Zhang et al.

Summary: This study introduced AQS into the fermentation process of excess sludge (ES) to enhance biohydrogen production. Results showed that AQS significantly improved the fermentation process and increased hydrogen production. Sequencing analysis and functional prediction revealed the regulatory effect of AQS on bacterial community and gene abundance, providing an effective pathway for zero-carbon hydrogen production.

Microbial community compositions and sulfate-reducing bacterial profiles in malodorous urban canal sediments

Krittayapong Jantharadej et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microbial community compositions of malodorous canal sediments in Thailand and found that anaerobic bacteria, including sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), dominated the communities. Nitrate and sulfate in sediments were identified as the most influential factors in shaping the spatial distribution of SRB. Understanding the role of SRB and other microorganisms in canal sediments can help in implementing effective odor reduction and management strategies in urban canals in the future.

Contribution of microplastic particles to the spread of resistances and pathogenic bacteria in treated wastewaters

Silvia Galafassi et al.

Summary: Microplastic particles (MPs) are prevalent pollutants in aquatic ecosystems, with a significant number reaching open waters and potentially contributing to the spread of pathogenic bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes. Studies have shown that the bacterial community on MPs differs from planktonic bacteria in treated wastewater, with potentially pathogenic bacteria showing higher abundances in the latter. However, only the sul2 resistance gene was found to be more abundant in the plastisphere compared to the planktonic bacterial community.
