Combined sewer overflow treatment: Assessing chemical pre-treatment and microsieve-based filtration in enhancing the performance of UV disinfection

Tiziana Venditto et al.

Summary: An efficient and cost-competitive treatment for CSO using UV disinfection was developed in this study. Pre-treatment and micro-sieve filtration were shown to significantly reduce suspended solids content and increase UV transmittance, with a microbial inactivation model developed to describe the decrease in fecal coliforms. The proposed treatment showed a reduction in TSS and FC, with cost analysis suggesting competitiveness with current treatment strategies.

The entering of polyethylene terephthalate microplastics into biological wastewater treatment system affects aerobic sludge digestion differently from their direct entering into sludge treatment system

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: The study investigated the inhibition effect of PET microplastics on waste activated sludge (WAS) aerobic digestion, showing a decrease in hydrolysis but an improvement in solubilization when PET microplastics enter the biological wastewater treatment system. However, direct addition of PET microplastics to the sludge aerobic digester resulted in serious inhibition of hydrolysis, significantly suppressing WAS aerobic digestion. Further investigation revealed that PET microplastics reduced the populations of key bacteria involved in aerobic digestion via induced oxidative stress or releasing toxic chemicals.

Microplastics removal efficiency of drinking water treatment plant with pulse clarifier

Dhruba Jyoti Sarkar et al.

Summary: Microplastics are recognized as common pollutants in aquatic environments that may have adverse effects on human health. A study evaluated the occurrence and removal efficiency of microplastics at different treatment stages in a typical DWTP with pulse clarification, showing good removal efficiency at the sand filtration stage and strong associations with other components in water. The results suggest that DWTPs with pulse clarification systems may have comparable microplastics removal efficiency to advanced DWTPs.

Summary: The study investigated the inactivation kinetics of multidrug-resistant bacteria in wastewater by the emerging environmentally-friendly disinfectant peracetic acid (PAA), showing that the inactivation was governed by exposure time and concentration integral. Soluble constituents in wastewater decreased PAA inactivation effectiveness, and chlorine showed higher inactivation of resistant bacteria compared to PAA.
