Fates of intracellular and extracellular antibiotic resistance genes during the cattle farm wastewater treatment process

Chengyu Liang et al.

Summary: The study found that cattle farm wastewater contains abundant antibiotic resistance genes, which can be gradually reduced in concentration through anaerobic treatment, phosphorus sludge digestion, membrane bioreactor, and ozone disinfection. The concentrations of ARGs are positively correlated with wastewater quality indicators, and there is also a positive correlation between iARGs and Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Spirochaetes.

Implications for mitigation of antibiotic resistance: Differential response of intracellular and extracellular antibiotic resistance genes to sludge fermentation coupled with thermal hydrolysis

Chen Cai et al.

Summary: The study found that thermal hydrolysis pretreatment can effectively remove antibiotic resistance genes in sewage sludge, but may increase extracellular ARGs. Intracellular ARGs were dominant during the acidogenic fermentation process, while extracellular ARGs were susceptible to biodegradation and had limited contribution to ARGs propagation.

Deciphering the extracellular and intracellular antibiotic resistance genes in multiple environments reveals the persistence of extracellular ones

Yina Zou et al.

Summary: This study systematically analyzed the extracellular and intracellular antibiotic resistance genes in different environments and found that their diversities, relative abundances, and compositions were similar. However, the correlation between extracellular integrons/ISs and ARGs was lower. The gene cassette and identified ARGs were different between extracellular and intracellular samples. Most ARGs were located on chromosomes, but the proportion of extracellular ARGs carried by plasmids increased.

Intracellular versus extracellular antibiotic resistance genes in the environment: Prevalence, horizontal transfer, and mitigation strategies

Ali Zarei-Baygi et al.

Summary: While iARGs are predominant in nutrient-rich environments, eARGs are more prevalent in aquatic environments. eARGs can be adsorbed by soil and sediment particles, protected from degradation, and therefore persist longer than iARGs. The characteristics of eARGs emphasize their crucial role in the spread of antibiotic resistance in the environment.

Metagenomic analysis reveals the fate of antibiotic resistance genes in two-stage and one-stage anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Zhijian Shi et al.

Summary: The study revealed that two-stage anaerobic digestion is more effective in removing antibiotic resistance genes compared to one-stage digestion, with hydrogen and methane production stages having different impacts on the fate of ARGs. Certain resistance genes were enriched in specific reactors, highlighting complex dynamics in the removal of ARGs during the treatment process.

Annual dynamics of antimicrobials and resistance determinants in flocculent and aerobic granular sludge treatment systems

Rebeca Pallares-Vega et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence and removal patterns of antimicrobial agents, antibiotic resistance genes, and E. coli in wastewater treatment plants. The results showed that wastewater treatment reduced the abundance of genes and E. coli, while partially removing antimicrobial agents, with some still detectable after treatment and accumulating in biosolids. Irrespective of the type of sludge treatment, the removal of genes was significantly reduced with increasing hydraulic loads caused by rainfall, and slightly decreased with increasing turbidity.

Ziyan Wei et al.

Summary: The study improved the high-throughput single-cell technology to track the hosts of the ARG sul1 gene in urban wastewater treatment plants. They found that the host bacteria were highly diverse and exhibited clear seasonal differences, and identified the important roles of HGT and VGT in the dissemination of ARGs.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance genes are common among bacteria, but not all pose high risks to human health. Researchers have developed an omics-based framework to rank these genes by risk, taking into account their enrichment in human associated environments, gene mobility, and host pathogenicity.
