Material flow analysis and life cycle assessment of food waste bioconversion by black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens L.)

Hanwen Guo et al.

Summary: This study provides a systematic analysis on material flow and environmental impacts of a food waste bioconversion plant using black soldier fly larvae, identifying significant emissions of methane, nitrous oxide, and ammonia, as well as quantifying their impacts on global warming potential, acidification, terrestrial and marine eutrophication, and particulate matter. Post-composting emissions, energy consumption, and fertilizer substitution ratio are identified as major contributors to these impacts, with mineral fertilizer and protein feed substitution ratio and energy consumption being identified as the most influential parameters. Control of the post-composting process is crucial in reducing environmental load caused by nitrogen-related emissions.

Effect of exposure to 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) copy number in rats

Samantha L. VanEtten et al.

Summary: Mitochondria are organelles responsible for cellular oxidation and energy production, and their damage can lead to changes in mtDNA copy number. Exposure to TCDD and a mixture of PCB 126 and PCB 153 increased mtDNA copy number in the liver and lung of rats, while exposure to non-DL PCB 153 resulted in decreased or unchanged mtDNA copy number. This suggests that mtDNA copy number could serve as a sensitive biomarker of mitochondrial injury and oxidative stress caused by dioxin-like compounds.

Sustainable Waste Management at Household Level with Black Soldier Fly Larvae (Hermetia illucens)

Saleha Mahmood et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the practicability of using BSFL bins at the household level to handle kitchen biowaste, finding that 50% of households were willing to continue the experiment. Key parameters such as waste treatment performance and larval development were assessed, highlighting the importance of source separation and cooperation for the successful implementation of BSFL-assisted biowaste bins.

EFFICIENT AND SAFE SUBSTRATES FOR BLACK SOLDIER FLY BIOWASTE TREATMENT ALONG CIRCULAR ECONOMY PRINCIPLES

Moritz Gold et al.

Summary: Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) treatment is an emerging technology for extracting nutrients from biowaste. A systematic assessment in Nairobi, Kenya identified challenges in selecting suitable substrates due to contamination and lack of services. A mixture of human faeces, animal manure, fruit/vegetable waste, and inorganic-containing food waste is recommended for upscaling BSFL treatment facilities.
