Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) range contraction and expansion in Europe under changing climate

Radoslaw Puchalka et al.

Summary: Robinia pseudoacacia, a fast-growing tree of high economic and cultural importance, is one of the most common non-native species in Europe. The study shows that changes in climate conditions by 2050 and 2070 will likely shift the potential distribution of R. pseudoacacia towards Central and Northeastern Europe, where this species is currently rare or absent. It emphasizes the need for policies aimed at climate change mitigation in Europe and the importance of using more complete distribution data for analyzing potential niche models.

Research agenda on biodiversity and ecosystem functions and services in European cities

Pedro Pinho et al.

Summary: Cities present challenges for human life due to environmental issues driven by urbanization. Biodiversity plays a key role in mitigating these challenges through ecosystem services, but urban biodiversity is affected by various factors. Improving mechanistic understanding of the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functions in cities can support sustainable urban ecosystem management and enhance urban population well-being.

Tree species richness and diversity predicts the magnitude of urban heat island mitigation effects of greenspaces

Xinjun Wang et al.

Summary: By studying the tree community structure of greenspaces in Changzhou, China, it was found that indicators such as the Shannon-Wiener diversity index, tree species richness, and tree canopy coverage are closely related to the strength of the cooling effect, with varying seasonal impacts. Mean crown width is positively correlated with the cooling range in summer and autumn, while greenspace tree density is negatively correlated with the cooling range in winter.

The role of the vegetation structure, primary productivity and senescence derived from airborne LiDAR and hyperspectral data for birds diversity and rarity on a restored site

Vitezslav Moudry et al.

Summary: Management of restored areas requires ecologically meaningful spatial data to establish objective measures of restoration success. Relationships between species diversity, habitat heterogeneity, and productivity were found to be crucial in prioritizing restoration management. Airborne LiDAR and hyperspectral data were utilized to predict richness and rarity of bird communities in newly restored habitats, with factors such as vegetation structure, primary productivity, and senescent vegetation being important predictors. The study highlighted the importance of creating a mosaic of habitats with heterogeneous vertical structure including all vegetation layers for successful restoration, suggesting a combination of forest restoration and spontaneous succession may be the optimal strategy for increasing bird species richness and rarity in restored sites after coal mining.
