Dry tribological behavior of a cast Mg-Gd-Zr-Ag alloy at room and elevated temperatures

A. Mansouri et al.

Summary: The addition of 2 wt.% Ag increased the hardness and wear resistance of cast Mg-6Gd-0.6Zr alloy. Microstructural studies revealed the presence of Ag-containing compounds in the a-Mg matrix. The addition of Ag resulted in a 20-30% increase in hardness at various temperatures up to 300 degrees C. The Mg-6Gd-0.6Zr-2Ag alloy exhibited higher wear resistance than Mg-6Gd-0.6Zr under a normal load of 5 N at different wear temperatures. However, at higher normal loads and specific temperature ranges, the Ag-containing alloy showed a higher wear rate compared to the base alloy.

Experimental and modelling study of the effect of martensite volume fraction on friction and wear of dual-phase steel at microscopic scale

C. Penfornis et al.

Summary: The study investigates the influence of martensite volume fraction, load and attack angle on the hardness, friction and wear of ferrite and martensite phases in a dual-phase microstructure. Friction coefficient increases with attack angle, with ferrite always having a higher coefficient than martensite. Higher martensite volume fraction leads to increased friction coefficient and decreased wear resistance. Increasing attack angle shifts wear mechanism from ploughing to cutting for martensite, with experimental results correlating to the Equal Pressure model by Axe 'n & al.
