An Experimental and Finite Element Approach for a Better Understanding of Ti-6Al-4V Behavior When Machining under Cryogenic Environment

Roland Bejjani et al.

Summary: This study focuses on optimizing cryogenic machining of aerospace titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V by investigating the effect of nozzle position. The research shows that nozzle location significantly impacts cutting temperatures and forces, with the separation distance being the dominant parameter. Cryogenic machining is found to reduce adhesion-diffusion wear and macroscopic brittle chipping of cutting inserts compared to dry turning, while also improving workpiece surface roughness by 44%.
