Genetic characterization of Italian and Spanish wild and domesticated chestnut trees

Sara Alessandri et al.

Summary: This study explored the genetic variability and origin of chestnuts in Europe. It revealed the presence of two genetically distinct groups of chestnuts in Spain and Italy, with a common genetic structure between southern Spain and southern Italy. The results also showed no genetic differentiation between cultivated and wild chestnuts, indicating gene flow between them.

The demographic history of Castanea sativa Mill. in southwest Europe: A natural population structure modified by translocations

Josefa Fernandez-Lopez et al.

Summary: The study found that European chestnut populations experienced contraction during the Early Pleistocene, splitting into Greek and Italian/Iberian populations. A secondary encounter occurred from the Middle to Late Pleistocene, explaining the hybrid origin of Western Mediterranean populations. Evidence suggests that germplasm translocation may have occurred from Italy to Central Iberian Range, resulting in high diversity in naturalized populations.

Genetic Diversity and Structure of Local Pear Cultivars from Mountainous Areas from Aragon (Northeastern Spain)

Francisco Javier Bielsa et al.

Summary: Genetic diversity and structure analysis of pear local varieties in mountainous areas of Northeastern Spain revealed a high level of genetic diversity and differentiation among sub-groups. The study also highlighted the genetic relatedness between these local varieties and currently cultivated pear cultivars, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding this diversity for potential new breeding programs.
