Recycled polyethylene and crumb rubber composites modified asphalt with improved aging resistance and thermal stability

Yuetan Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, CR/PE composites were used to improve the aging resistance of modified binder blends. The composites formed a thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) network that resisted the aging severity of the binder blends. The well dispersed PE particles interacted with the diffused CR particles to form a network, enhancing the thermal behavior of the binder blends.

Potential Alternative to Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene for Asphalt Modification Using Recycled Rubber-Plastic Blends

Yuetan Ma et al.

Summary: This study explored the use of recycled rubber-plastic blends as an alternative modifier to SBS for asphalt modification, improving the performance of asphalt mixtures. The results showed that the recycled rubber-plastic-modified asphalt formed interacted continuous phases of rubber and plastic, enhancing the compatibility of binder blends and the performance of asphalt mixtures. Recycled rubber-plastic blends can be considered as a potentially suitable alternative for asphalt modification from both performance and economical perspectives.

Investigating binder aging during hot in-place recycling (HIR) of asphalt pavement

Haobai Zhong et al.

Summary: Hot in-place recycling (HIR) is an effective way to reuse reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) by heating the pavement at a high temperature. However, the high heating temperature may cause significant aging on the SBS modified asphalt used in the pavement. This study aims to understand the aging behavior of SBS modified asphalt in HIR projects and provides guidance for future projects.

Compatibility and rheological characterization of asphalt modified with recycled rubber-plastic blends

Yuetan Ma et al.

Summary: This study focused on improving the compatibility of asphalt modified with recycled plastic and rubber, which has shown significant enhancement in physical properties through the increase of recycled rubber content, addition of compatibilizer, and use of pre-combined recycled rubber-plastic blends. These improvements present a promising pathway for large-scale commercial applications of plastic and rubber modified asphalt.

Quantifying the effective mobilized RAP content during hot in-place recycling techniques

Yuetan Ma et al.

Summary: A new method called the ignition oven method was developed to quantify the effective mobilized RAP content during HIR procedures, which has been proven effective and comparable to the FTIR methods. The temperatures and dosage of additives play a critical role in improving the mobilization of RAP and should be optimized for achieving sustainable pavement.
