Active Spreading: Hydraulics for Enhancing Groundwater Remediation

Lauren J. Sather et al.

Summary: During in situ groundwater remediation, active spreading can enhance reaction by increasing the surface area of the reaction front. The degree of reaction depends on mechanical dispersion, which is influenced by the local velocity and contaminant concentration gradient.

Enhanced NAPL Removal and Mixing With Engineered Injection and Extraction

Yufei Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes an engineered injection and extraction (EIE) method to enhance the removal and mixing of liquid solutions in aquifers. The results show that EIE can significantly improve removal efficiency and mixing, especially under conditions of preferential channels, high permeability heterogeneity, and a mobility ratio larger than one.

Fluid deformation in isotropic Darcy flow

Daniel R. Lester et al.

Summary: The deformation of fluid elements plays a crucial role in various processes in porous media. Recent studies have shown that steady three-dimensional Darcy flow with isotropic hydraulic conductivity exhibits constrained kinematics due to its helicity-free nature. This constraint limits the fluid deformation to algebraic growth, with stretching behavior ranging from sublinear to superlinear. The deformation of fluid in three-dimensional isotropic Darcy flow is remarkably similar to that in two-dimensional Darcy flow.

Scalar Signatures of Chaotic Mixing in Porous Media

J. Heyman et al.

Summary: Steady laminar flows through porous media can lead to Lagrangian chaos at pore scale, impacting a range of transport, reactive, and biological processes. A novel technique based on high-resolution imaging of scalar signatures has been developed to address the challenge of characterizing mixing dynamics in these opaque environments. By estimating the Lyapunov exponent and extending Lagrangian stretching theories, a full characterization of chaotic mixing dynamics in porous materials has been achieved.

Pore-scale effects during the transition from capillary- to viscosity-dominated flow dynamics within microfluidic porous-like domains

A. Yiotis et al.

Summary: This study investigates immiscible two-phase flows in microfluidic domains with disordered obstacles, showing the transition from capillarity-controlled to viscosity-dominated regime with multiple pores invaded simultaneously. The experimental validation of a Level-Set model reveals the effects of viscous flow on contact angles. The proposed numerical approach demonstrates strong potential in simulating multiphase flow in porous domains over a wide range of Capillary numbers.

Lagrangian Transport and Chaotic Advection in Three-Dimensional Laminar Flows

Michel Speetjens et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the importance of transport and mixing in fluid flows, focusing on the role of Lagrangian fluid motion and chaotic advection in laminar transport. It also highlights the challenges in bridging the gap between scientific insights and technological applications of Lagrangian transport, as well as the categorization of 3D practical flows to facilitate knowledge transfer and integration with fundamentals of Lagrangian transport.

The Lagrangian kinematics of three-dimensional Darcy flow

Daniel R. Lester et al.

Summary: Darcy's law is widely used for modeling flow in heterogeneous porous media with a spatially varying conductivity field. The isotropic Darcy equation imposes significant constraints on the Lagrangian kinematics of the flow field, resulting in a simple yet complex flow structure that does not allow closed or knotted flow paths. This study explores the impact of these constraints on the kinematics of Darcy flow and sheds light on its relevance and limitations as a model of transport, mixing, and reaction in porous media.
