The omicron (B.1.1.529) SARS-CoV-2 variant of concern does not readily infect Syrian hamsters

Rana Abdelnabi et al.

Summary: The infectivity of the omicron variant in hamsters was found to be lower than that of the ancestral D614G strain, with a significant decrease in viral RNA load in the lungs and no detectable infectious virus in this organ. Histopathological examination of the lungs from omicron-infected hamsters revealed no signs of peri-bronchial inflammation or bronchopneumonia.

mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccine boosters induce neutralizing immunity against SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant

Wilfredo F. Garcia-Beltran et al.

Summary: Recent surveillance has identified the emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant, which carries up to 36 mutations in the spike protein and has the potential to evade vaccine-induced immunity. This study found that individuals vaccinated with mRNA vaccines exhibited strong neutralization of the Omicron variant, while most vaccinees had weak neutralization. The study also revealed that the Omicron variant infects more efficiently than other tested variants.

Immunological and clinical efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines in immunocompromised populations: a systematic review

Simon Galmiche et al.

Summary: This article systematically reviews the immunogenicity, efficacy, and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines in immunocompromised populations. The results highlight the risk of low immunogenicity in solid organ transplant recipients and patients with hematological malignancy. Enhanced vaccine regimens may be necessary despite the lack of vaccine effectiveness data.

Summary: The study in England found that vaccination of SOT recipients against SARS-CoV-2 can reduce infection-related mortality, with better outcomes seen in recipients of the ChAdOx1-S vaccine. However, overall protection remains inferior to that in the general population.

Comparison of SARS-CoV-2 Antibody Response 4 Weeks After Homologous vs Heterologous Third Vaccine Dose in Kidney Transplant Recipients A Randomized Clinical Trial

Roman Reindl-Schwaighofer et al.

Summary: Less than 50% of kidney transplant recipients developed antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein after 2 doses of an mRNA vaccine. A third dose of either mRNA or vector vaccine increased antibody response in 39% of KTRs without prior immune response, but neutralizing antibodies and T-cell response remained low. Triple immunosuppression, longer time after transplant, and torque teno virus plasma levels were associated with vaccine response. Local pain was higher with mRNA vaccine, but systemic symptoms were similar between groups.

Neutralization against Omicron variant in transplant recipients after three doses of mRNA vaccine

Deepali Kumar et al.

Summary: The Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus has become the dominant circulating strain globally, and three doses of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine are recommended for transplant recipients. However, there is limited research on the immunogenicity of mRNA vaccines specifically against the Omicron variant. This study analyzed the neutralization effects of Omicron in transplant recipients who received three doses of mRNA-1273 vaccine, and the results showed poor neutralizing responses against the Omicron variant in these patients.

Summary: This study evaluated the antibody response to SARS-COV-2 vaccines in 707 kidney transplant recipients and found a poor response after two doses of the vaccine. The use of mycophenolic acid, an immunosuppressive drug used after kidney transplantation, had a negative impact on vaccine response.

Clinical severity of, and effectiveness of mRNA vaccines against, covid-19 from omicron, delta, and alpha SARS-CoV-2 variants in the United States: prospective observational study

Adam S. Lauring et al.

Summary: mRNA vaccines were highly effective in preventing covid-19 associated hospital admissions related to the alpha, delta, and omicron variants. Three vaccine doses were required for protection against omicron, while two doses provided protection against delta and alpha variants. Omicron variant showed lower disease severity compared to delta variant but still resulted in morbidity and mortality. Vaccinated patients had lower disease severity than unvaccinated patients for all the variants.

Cell-based Culture Informs Infectivity and Safe De-Isolation Assessments in Patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019

Kerri Basile et al.

Summary: The study found that SARS-CoV-2 culture can serve as a surrogate marker for infectivity, helping to inform de-isolation protocols. The virus was more likely to be isolated from samples collected from inpatients and ICU patients, suggesting higher infectivity in these patient populations.

Assignment of epidemiological lineages in an emerging pandemic using the pangolin tool

Aine O'Toole et al.

Summary: The global virus genomics community has responded unprecedentedly to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, leading to significant advances in 'real-time' generation and sharing of genomic data. The development of new analytical methods, such as pangolin, has been necessary to handle the rapid growth in virus genome data production. Pangolin has processed nearly two million virus genomes, aiding in SARS-CoV-2 genomic epidemiology and providing researchers with valuable information about the pandemic's transmission lineages.
