Can domestication shape Canidae brain morphology? The accessory olfactory bulb of the red fox as a case in point

Irene Ortiz-Leal et al.

Summary: The fox accessory olfactory bulb (AOB) shows a higher degree of morphological development compared with the dog AOB. The findings suggest that domestication may have affected the morphological structure of the dog AOB.

The vomeronasal system in semiaquatic beavers

Jumpei Tomiyasu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the specificities of the beaver vomeronasal system by histologically and immunohistochemically analyzing the VNO and AOB of Eurasian beavers. The results showed that beavers can recognize volatile odorants and nonvolatile substances using the vomeronasal system. The findings highlight the importance of the vomeronasal system in beaver chemical communication.

Analysis of the vomeronasal organ transcriptome reveals variable gene expression depending on age and function in rabbits

P. R. Villamayor et al.

Summary: The RNA sequencing study of rabbit VNO reveals a diverse expression of vomeronasal receptor families and other gene families relevant to VNO function. Sex hormone-related pathways are consistently enriched in the VNO, emphasizing its importance in reproduction. Furthermore, significant transcriptome differences are observed between sexes, but not between age groups.

MEGA11 Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis Version 11

Koichiro Tamura et al.

Summary: MEGA software, a mature tool for computational molecular evolution, has been enhanced with new additions for building timetrees of species, pathogens, and gene families using rapid relaxed-clock methods. These additions include methods for estimating divergence times, confidence intervals, and new options for tagging sequences with spatiotemporal sampling information. The enhancements aim to improve user experience, result quality, and the pace of biological discovery.
