Ballistic performance and energy dissipation characteristics of cylindrical honeycomb sandwich structure

Gaurav Tiwari et al.

Summary: The energy absorption and ballistic behavior of cylindrical sandwich shells consisting of honeycomb core and cylindrical face sheets were studied using experiments and numerical simulations. The results showed that the thickness of the face sheets had a significant influence on the performance of the sandwich structure, while the geometric parameters of the honeycomb core had a minor effect.

Impact resistance of bio-inspired sandwich beam with side-arched and honeycomb dual-core

A. B. H. Kueh et al.

Summary: The study computationally explores the impact resistance of a bio-inspired sandwich beam, inspired by the beak, skull bone, hyoid, and spongy bone of the woodpecker head. Geometrical effects on impact behaviors are examined, and the beam with a thin arched core is found to perform optimally due to its high impact resistance efficiency index. Models with thicker arched cores exhibit higher contact force, damage area, and energy absorption, while thinner arched cores with varying leg spans are maximally stressed.

On the structural parameters of honeycomb-core sandwich panels against low-velocity impact

Guangyong Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the low-velocity impact behavior of honeycomb-core sandwich panels through experimental and numerical analysis, identifying two distinct failure modes. Structural parameters such as facesheet thickness, core height, honeycomb cell size, and cell wall thickness were found to significantly influence the impact performance of the sandwich panels. Optimizing the structural design by controlling these parameters can enhance perforation resistance and energy absorption capacity.

Impact Resistance Analysis of a Composite Double-Layer Honeycomb Sandwich Structure

G. J. Bi et al.

Summary: A composite double-layer honeycomb sandwich structure was proposed to enhance the impact resistance of fillers in helicopter rotors, and 44 groups of such structures were numerically simulated. The fracture energy of the composite structure was related to the cell diameter, wall thickness, and material strength. Decreasing cell diameter and increasing wall thickness and material strength gradually enhance the energy absorption rate of the structure.
