Does integrated soil fertility management increase returns to land and labor? Plot-level evidence from Ethiopia

Denise Hoerner et al.

Summary: This study finds that the core practices of Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM) and their combinations can improve land and labor productivity, as well as increase net crop value. Despite higher labor demand, the joint use of all three practices has the greatest effects. Additionally, the study suggests that the combination of organic fertilizer with improved seeds may be more beneficial compared to combinations with inorganic fertilizer.

Decoupling livestock and crop production at the household level in China

Shuqin Jin et al.

Summary: The study finds a significant decrease in the proportion of rural Chinese households engaging in both livestock raising and crop planting, highlighting the need to rebuild the connections for sustainable agriculture. Livestock manure, once a key source of nutrients in traditional farming, is now being underutilized, leading to resource wastage and environmental damage. Rebuilding the links between livestock and croplands at a regional scale offers important opportunities for the sustainable intensification of agriculture in China.

Can China's overuse of fertilizer be reduced without threatening food security and farm incomes?

C. F. A. van Wesenbeeck et al.

Summary: China has made significant progress in increasing agricultural production, improving food security, and reducing rural poverty since 1980. However, overuse of chemical fertilizer has posed challenges to the environment and human health. The government has announced policies to reduce chemical fertilizer use while supporting rural incomes and maintaining food self-sufficiency. Research shows that with appropriate policy combinations, nutrient surpluses can be reduced, rural incomes can be supported, and food self-sufficiency can be maintained. Efforts are still needed to address these issues, particularly in poverty-stricken provinces.

Agricultural subsidies and global greenhouse gas emissions

David Laborde et al.

Summary: Agricultural sectors receive $600 billion per year in government support, but removing this support will not significantly reduce global GHG emissions. Redirecting support to contribute to climate change mitigation is needed, as well as revamping existing support to agriculture and food consumption for substantial reduction of GHG emissions while ensuring food security.

Summary: Current actions are insufficient to achieve both the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Integrated model-based analysis suggests that strong interventions and ambitious lifestyle changes are necessary for real progress. Climate policies, economic development, education, technological progress, and less resource-intensive lifestyles are crucial elements for progress, but additional sustainable development measures are needed to reach the targets.

Reconciling regional nitrogen boundaries with global food security

Jinfeng Chang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that mobilizing all nitrogen mitigation options simultaneously can substantially reduce hunger, even while respecting regional nitrogen surplus boundaries, with supply-side measures being more important than demand-side efforts. In addition, international trade plays a crucial role in sustaining global food security under nitrogen boundary constraints.
