Individualized ergonomic wellness approach for the practicing gastroenterologist (with video)

Summary: A new method of endoscopist wellness assessment was developed in this study, involving physical therapist intervention to create individualized wellness plans. Results showed that this method was well-received and led to improvement in musculoskeletal complaints among endoscopists. Individualized assessment and optimization of ergonomics were found to be necessary for reducing pain and fatigue, prolonging career longevity, decreasing burnout, and reducing lost days of work among practitioners.

Some injured endoscopists made modifications to their practice, and many believed that repetitive limb strain and challenging body positions were likely causes of their injuries. Treatment modalities for these injuries included physiotherapy, medications, rest, splinting, steroid injections, and surgery.
