Key Considerations for Accurate Exposures in Ecotoxicological Assessments of Perfluorinated Carboxylates and Sulfonates

Justin N. Rewerts et al.

Summary: Toxicity reference values for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) vary even with the same test organism, and confirming dosing solution concentrations is crucial but lacks experimental data support. Laboratory findings suggest that dissolution time of PFAS solids significantly impacts the measured concentrations, with mixing times varying between 2 to 5 hours for different PFAS depending on carbon fluorine chain-length.

Improved surface properties in spray-coated PU/TiO2/graphene hybrid nanocomposites through nonsolvent-induced phase separation

Salman Mirzadeh et al.

Summary: Superhydrophobic and antibacterial polyurethane nanocomposite films loaded with TiO2 and graphene nanoparticles were fabricated via a spray coating technique. The combination of TiO2, graphene, and nonsolvent led to a hierarchical structure with high uniform surface roughness, resulting in superhydrophobic/roll-off behavior and increased antibacterial activity to around 99%. The presence of TiO2 and graphene nanoparticles in the nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) process played a significant role in promoting the surface properties of the films.

A chemical kinetic model for the decomposition of perfluorinated sulfonic acids

Mohammednoor Altarawneh

Summary: The study investigates the thermal decomposition of perfluorinated sulfonic acids, constructing a detailed kinetic model to illustrate the major chemical reactions involved. Results indicate that major reactions include unimolecular decomposition channels, hydrofluorination, hydrolysis, and fragmentation of the alkyl chain. The model aids in understanding the fate and chemical transformation of PFCs under a pyrolytic environment relevant to waste incineration and fluorine mineralization.

A Ti-OH bond breaking route for creating oxygen vacancy in titania towards efficient CO2 photoreduction

Meng Shen et al.

Summary: This study successfully created oxygen vacancies in stable TiO2 through a simple method, facilitating CO2 photoreduction reactions and significantly increasing the product formation rates compared to commercial TiO2. Further in-situ FTIR analysis revealed that oxygen vacancies favor the activation of CO2 and the formation of CO.

Investigation of distribution, sources and flux of perfluorinated compounds in major southern Indian rivers and their risk assessment

Krishna Kumar Selvaraj et al.

Summary: PFC concentrations were investigated in three major rivers in southern India, with perfluoro-n-hexanoic acid being the most detected congener. Higher levels of PFCs were observed in summer compared to post-monsoon season, mainly due to decreased river flow. Domestic and commercial wastewater were identified as the major sources, and most detected PFCs share a common migration source.

A review of responses of terrestrial organisms to perfluorinated compounds

Yanping Cai et al.

Summary: Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are a class of persistent organic pollutants widely distributed in the environment, with significant impact in soil environments necessitating toxicological assessment on terrestrial organisms. The effects of PFCs on soil microorganisms, plants, and earthworms mainly accelerate the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in terrestrial organisms, calling for further in-depth research on the complex soil environment.

Analyzing the mechano-bactericidal effect of nano-patterned surfaces on different bacteria species

Erfan Maleki et al.

Summary: The mechano-bactericidal effects demonstrated by specific nano-patterns have opened up the possibility of creating sustainable antibacterial materials. Experimental data was collected to develop in-silico models to study the impact of individual geometrical features on the bactericidal effect. Analysis identified geometrical parameters that can exhibit bactericidal effects against three prevalent bacterial species simultaneously.

Calcium, magnesium and aluminium ions as decontaminating agents against dermal fluoride absorption following hydrofluoric acid exposure

Suvarna Mini Vijayan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that appropriate decontamination agents (such as calcium, magnesium, aluminum) can reduce the absorption of fluoride by human skin after exposure to hydrofluoric acid, and reducing contamination time can also help decrease fluoride absorption. Prompt decontamination is key to successfully limiting fluoride absorption.
