Contrasting Effects of Grazing vs Browsing Herbivores Determine Changes in Soil Fertility in an East African Savanna

C. Coetsee et al.

Summary: This study used a long-term herbivore removal experiment to investigate changes in soil nitrogen levels at nutrient-rich glades and adjacent nutrient-poor bushland sites. The results showed that soil nitrogen increased with herbivore removal, but remained unchanged in the presence of herbivores at low-nutrient bushland sites. Surprisingly, soil nitrogen in nutrient-rich glades also increased with herbivore removal, but declined when grazed. Grazers and browsers appear to have unique effects on the nitrogen cycle and create heterogeneity in the ecosystem.

Limited increases in savanna carbon stocks over decades of fire suppression

Yong Zhou et al.

Summary: This study provides one of the first direct estimates of the impact of over 60 years of fire exclusion in African savannas, showing that fire suppression can increase whole-ecosystem carbon storage but to a lesser extent than previously assumed, with significant belowground carbon reserves being overlooked.

Variation in soil seed bank and relationship with aboveground vegetation across microhabitats in a savanna-woodland of West Africa

Lassina Sanou et al.

Summary: The density and diversity of soil seed banks in the studied area are affected by microhabitat and vegetation types. There are significant differences in SSB density and richness among different microhabitats. Under tree canopies, which provide ecological niches for diverse seed accumulation, are important for the restoration of savanna-woodland ecosystems.

The Diurnal Dynamics of Gross Primary Productivity Using Observations From the Advanced Baseline Imager on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R Series at an Oak Savanna Ecosystem

A. M. Khan et al.

Summary: This study used satellite data to explore the diurnal variability of GPP and its relationship with environmental conditions. By comparing three methods, it was found that the LRC-NIRvP model provided relatively accurate estimates of GPP and revealed the characteristic of the peak of GPP shifting towards the morning hours during summer in relation to incoming solar radiation.

Historic changes in the fire-rainfall relationship at a woodland-savanna transition zone in southern Africa

T. Hamilton et al.

Summary: Southern Africa is expected to face increased maximum temperatures, rainfall variation, and frequency of extreme rainfall events in the future. The interactions among fire, rainfall, and woody cover make it difficult to predict future ecosystem changes. Human activities can also drive changes in these components and their interactions. Limited long-term datasets are available to monitor these changes over ecologically relevant time-scales.
