Intra- and inter-observer reliability of the novel vertebral bone quality score

Alex Mierke et al.

Summary: This study assessed the intra- and inter-observer reliability of the novel vertebral bone quality (VBQ) scoring system. The results showed that the VBQ scores demonstrated excellent reliability among observers and within observers, regardless of patient history or MRI manufacturer/ magnet strength.

Preoperative MRI-based vertebral bone quality (VBQ) score assessment in patients undergoing lumbar spinal fusion

Stephan N. Salzmann et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between VBQ and spine QCT BMD measurements and assess whether the VBQ score can predict the presence of osteopenia/osteoporosis diagnosed with QCT. The results showed that the VBQ score had moderate diagnostic ability to differentiate patients with normal BMD versus osteopenic/osteoporotic BMD based on QCT.

Methods for bone quality assessment in human bone tissue: a systematic review

Fangxing Wang et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed methods for assessing bone quality in human bone tissue, including imaging techniques, mechanical testing modalities, and compositional characterization. Advanced techniques in assessing bone morphology and microarchitecture are increasingly important, with non-invasive imaging modalities, mechanical testing techniques, and bone composition assessment complementing each other to provide comprehensive information on bone quality in human bone specimens.

Vertebral bone quality score predicts fragility fractures independently of bone mineral density

Jeff Ehresman et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate whether the MRI-derived VBQ score can predict fragility fractures in high-risk patients, and the results showed a significant association between VBQ score and fragility fractures, which outperformed the predictive value of DXA bone mineral density measurement.

Interrater and Intrarater Reliability of the Vertebral Bone Quality Score

Andrew T. Schilling et al.

Summary: In this study, reviewers demonstrated moderate to excellent reliability for the VBQ score and excellent reliability for all constituent components. Inter-rater reliability was also found to be good for both rounds of assessment, indicating consistent scoring across different reviewers.
