Exploiting the Optical Limits of Thin-Film Solar Cells: A Review on Light Management Strategies in Cu(In,Ga)Se2

Antonio J. N. Oliveira et al.

Summary: Light management is crucial for the expansion of CIGS technology market, as it can improve conversion efficiency and reduce costs. However, there are fabrication and architecture constraints that hinder the direct transfer of light management strategies from other photovoltaic technologies. This study analyzes the demand for light management in thin and ultrathin CIGS cells and identifies three main pathways to tackle optical losses. The review provides insights into the challenges and developments of light management architectures, presenting a research roadmap for future works in this area.

High-Performance and Industrially Viable Nanostructured SiOx Layers for Interface Passivation in Thin Film Solar Cells

Jose M. V. Cunha et al.

Summary: Through the use of industrial techniques, it has been demonstrated that a passivation layer with nanocontacts based on silicon oxide can significantly improve the optoelectronical performance of ultrathin CIGS solar cells. The passivation layer shows positive passivation properties for two different CIGS growth conditions, leading to a 2.6% improvement in light to power conversion efficiency compared to nonpassivated devices. However, there is a trade-off between passivation effect and charge extraction, as demonstrated by the balance between open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current density compared with fill factor.

On the Importance of Joint Mitigation Strategies for Front, Bulk, and Rear Recombination in Ultrathin Cu(In,Ga)Se2 Solar Cells

Tomas S. Lopes et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the simultaneous implementation of potassium fluoride (KF) post-deposition treatment (PDT) and a rear interface passivation strategy on ultrathin Cu(In,Ga)Se-2 (CIGS) solar cells for the first time. Electrical measurements and simulations suggested that under specific conditions, devices with only KF-PDT treatment may outperform those with rear interface passivation alone. By combining KF-PDT and rear interface passivation, there was a significant enhancement in open-circuit voltage and reduction in recombination losses, leading to improved charge carrier lifetime in the studied devices.
