Sleep Apnea-Specific Hypoxic Burden, Symptom Subtypes, and Risk of Cardiovascular Events and All-Cause Mortality

Wojciech Trzepizur et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate whether symptom subtypes and OSA-specific hypoxic burden are associated with the risk of major adverse CV events in a clinical setting. The results showed that HB and overall nocturnal hypoxemia were the only predictors of MACE, with a stronger association seen in younger patients and women.

Metrics of sleep apnea severity: beyond the apnea-hypopnea index

Atul Malhotra et al.

Summary: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects nearly 1 billion people globally with established cardiovascular and neurocognitive consequences. The apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) is a widely studied metric of OSA severity, but alternative metrics like hypoxic burden and arousal intensity are being explored. Future research should focus on capturing clinically meaningful OSA endophenotypes using genetics, blood biomarkers, machine learning, and wearable technologies.

Predicting Cardiovascular Outcomes Using the Respiratory Event Desaturation Transient Area Derived from Overnight Sleep Studies

Philip de Chazal et al.

Summary: A new method for predicting cardiovascular disease outcomes in individuals undergoing an overnight sleep test has been introduced, which quantifies desaturation associated with respiratory events. The method, called respiratory event desaturation transient area (REDTA), was developed and tested using data from the Sleep Heart Health Study. Results show that the REDTA parameter performs well in predicting cardiovascular death risk.
